Found wandering the streets with a strange case of memory loss, not much is known about his past.
Despite struggling with his lack of memory, he's developed carefree personality and a kind heart. When he's on the job, he doesn't stop for anything, driven by what he believes is right, often being scolded by his boss, Shizue Kuranushi, due to his reckless behaviour. Date's one passion in life is collecting "vintage magazines," stashing them all over his apartment, and even meeting up with like-minded individuals to discuss them. Although the activity is looked down upon by his daughter, Mizuki Date, they get along well, and share a large amount of friends.
He met his partner Aiba five years ago after they worked on a case together. Even though they butt heads most of the time, there's a deep care and mutual understanding between the both of them.
